NOTIZIE INTORNO ALLA VITA QUOTIDIANA DELLA NOSTRA CHIESA

31 Luglio 2022

NEWSFLASH ANTIOCH: July 2022 The summer months are always very slow as everyone goes on vacation.

In Antioch many of the Christians go to the sea, to Aruz in the Gulf of Iskenderun, and its surroundings, where they have a summer houses both to enjoy the sea and to escape the heat. Pastoral activities are also reduced to the essentials with only weekday and Sunday mass. However the church is open every day in the afternoon for the many visitors and pilgrims who have started to return. We wish you all enjoyable holidays! 2nd July. After participating in the feast of St. Peter in Antioch (29th June), a group of young people from the Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia continued with a few days of formation in Iskenderun with Fr Antuan Igit, SJ and some collaborators. Today they finished and everyone returned happy to their own churches. Seven from Antioch participated. 3rd July. Br. Okan (Abraham), a Capuchin theology student, and his cousin Challar, spent a few days in Antioch. 7th July. This is the beginning of the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice (Kurban Bayram in Turkish) It is a four day feast but, this year with weekends and the 15th July public holiday, there will be 10 days of vacation. Today the authorities receive greetings in front of the prefecture. Fr Francis and I go too. 8th July. A group of young Italians have spent a week in Iskenderun and today they visit Antioch. They are accompanied by Luca Bomba. 11th July. Prof. Dr. Necdet Unuvar, from the University of Ankara (founded by Kemal Ataturk) visits our church. He is accompanied by Gazi Uri who was a boy in our parish and is now a well-known orthopaedist in the Turkish capital. 11th July. In the courtyard of our church, 80 priests from the Neocatechumenal Way of Abruzzo and Marche concelebrate with the rectors of the Seminaries of Macerata and Ascoli Piceno with about twenty collaborators led by Eusebio Giulietta. At the beginning I talk to them at length about Antioch and its importance at the beginning of the Church. Here are our roots… and we are where we were first called Christians! 12th July. Again with the Neocatechumens we have Lauds in our courtyard, after which we make a visit to the synagogue of Antioch. The sound of over a hundred people singing Shema Israel there was impressive to say the least! 14th July. Msg Paolo Bizzeti stays in Antioch for a few days with an Italian group (24) including 4 priests. He uses our church for catechesis and celebrations. Today they leave for Seleucia and Iskenderun. 15th July. Today is the National Day of Unity and Democracy a holiday instituted following the failed "coup" of 2016. Fr. Francis represents the Catholic Church. 17th July. Today is the anniversary of Fr Domenico’s arrival in Antioch. Thirty-five years have passed ... and it seems like yesterday! 19th July. Fr Domenico gets vaccinated in order to be able to go to Italy. He hadn't taken the third dose against Covid-19 20th July. The president of an Alawite association brings an Iraqi ayatollah to visit our church. 24th July. From the 20th until today, the young members of the Neocatechumenal Way of Turkey and Greece have made a pilgrimage from Istanbul to Ephesus with stops in Iznik (Nicaea where the first council of the Church took place), Troy, Bergamo, Sardis and Ephesus where it ended. They were led by the itinerants Fr Valeriano, Philip, and an exceptional guide, Hanry Leylek. A young couple, Pius and Rosmari, went from Antioch. The pilgrimage began with the blessing of the Apostolic Vicar of Istanbul, Msg. Maximilian. 29th July. Finally Fr. Domenico can safely leave for Italy (so to speak!) In Antioch, Fr Francis stays alone. 31st July. Father Domenico, after spending 2 days in our missionary animation center in San Martino in Rio (RE), arrives in his birthplace, Monchio di Palagano (MO). He will stay there for 3 weeks.
