NOTIZIE INTORNO ALLA VITA QUOTIDIANA DELLA NOSTRA CHIESA

30 Settembre 2021

NEWSFLASH ANTIOCH: SEPTEMBER 2021 September 6th . During a visit to Antakya the wife of the Slovenian ambassador to Turkey comes to pray at our church. Here she is enjoying two small glasses of our limoncello.

6 September. We celebrate an Ecumenical (Catholic-Orthodox) marriage with the participation of the Syriac Bishop of Adyaman, Mor Petrus Pavlus. September 8th. During the pandemic lockdown, Kristin, Kristofer and Lydia (children of our domestic worker) did invaluable work so the liturgy could continue online and in the garden. To thank them I take them to the sea for a few days. September 9th. Once again the mountain overlooking Antakya is the victim of terrible fire which destroys even more of the pine forest already damaged by the fire in July. September 10th. A group of Columbian pilgrims from a Jesuit university visit. Since they have no priest, I speak to them about the importance of Antakya/ Antioch with the help of a woman who studied in Milan, and we have a moment of prayer together. September 14th. Fr Massimiliano Palinuro, a Fidei Donum priest and Parish Priest of Trabzon, where Fr Andrea Santoro was murdered, has been appointed new Apostolic Vicar to the Latins of Istanbul. As part of the Vicariate of Anatolia he held Spiritual Exercises for the Capuchins last June. September 18th. Finally, after months of drought, heavy rain arrives during the night. September 20th. Fr Francis goes to the United States for medical treatment. I wish him a speedy recovery and come back soon. September 24th. Cigdem, one of our tenants, invites all the neighbours, myself included, to celebrate her birthday. She is a lawyer from Istanbul who works for a Danish humanitarian organisation. Here in our small city she has found a lot of ‘humanity’ which has been lost in large cities. September 26th. Eleven Metropolitan Mayors from the left wing CHP governed cities including Ankara, Istanbul,Izmir and Adana are here as guests of the mayor of Antakya. They have been visiting all the important sites in the area and this includes our church. This photo shows some of the ladies and the mayors of Antakya (Lutfu Savas), Istanbul (Ekrem Imamoglu) and Ankara (Mansur Yavas) along with our neighbourhood bakers. September 29th. From 27th to 29th the Capuchins of Turkey met in the convent Yesilkoy (Istanbul). Fr Lorenzo, our Provincial, and Fr Marek, in charge of the house of Frascati-Rome, were present. We spent three beautiful days together which were very useful for training and sharing. We also visited the church the Syriacs are building on our old cemetery. September 30th. The COVID situation here is not very comforting. Last week 2528 cases were recorded. That averages at 360 a day and 10,832 for the month. Three Catholic girls brought the virus home from school and five out of seven members of their family were infected. The old grandfather is, unfortunately, in critical condition in intensive care.
